How Technology Has Transformed Sport

Along with almost every aspect of our daily lives, technology has made its way into numerous industries, from manufacturing to medicine. One industry in particular has seen a significant difference thanks to the powers of technology – the sports industry.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at how technology is used in different sports and how it has transformed the industry, both for the athletes participating and for the audience watching.

Performance Reviews

Coaches are constantly looking to improve an athlete’s performances, and advancements in technology have made it easier than ever to accurately monitor progress. Whether it be tracking measurements such as distance, weight, or time, studying overall fitness levels using heart rate monitors, or rewatching recorded performances to create in-depth analysis.

The ease of monitoring and reviewing means coaches and athletes can evaluate strengths and identify weaknesses to continuously enhance their performance.

Equipment

The right equipment can amplify an athlete’s performance, allowing them to reach their full potential. For example, a light and flexible material ensures a gymnast has access to a full range of movement without being restricted, and a specialist shoe might provide better grip and cushioning to a runner.

Accuracy

One of the most significant changes technology has made to sport is its ability to offer accurate insights into gameplay. It’s not unusual for a referee or match official to make a decision that many see as controversial. But now, thanks to technology, decisions can be backed by solid evidence, whether it be from an instant replay or video assistant referee.

One example of this is ‘touchfinder’ technology, which will be used during Six Nations 2025. This evolution of smart ball technology will allow match officials to identify exactly where the ball crosses the touchline. The ability to capture these moments ensures accuracy and fairness for each team.

Injury

Access to technology means it’s faster and easier than ever to diagnose and treat injuries. Not only does this speed up the process of getting an athlete back to full health, but it can also prevent further injury.

Alongside this, the use of virtual reality and simulations has made it possible for athletes to practice without the risk of injury. Particularly for high risk sports, such as skiing, athletes can now use simulation games and high-tech equipment to replicate their sport without actually taking part, reducing the risk of potential injury.

Viewer Experience

It’s not just the athletes themselves that see benefits from technology in sport – today’s technology has also enhanced the way viewers watch and engage with various sports. Broadcasting is considerably more engaging and interactive than it once was. From replays and highlight reels, to in-depth game analysis and evaluations, technology has created a completely immersive experience for sports fans.

What Will the Future of Technology in Sports Look Like?

It’s hard to predict the future of technology in sports, but it’s fair to say we can expect advances in technology that will provide more immersive experiences for viewers, that will further strengthen the abilities of athletes, and continue to improve the way sport is played and consumed across the world.
